Unit 3 Professional and Academic Contexts (PAC)
This project required me to submit a body of research work that supports the development and delivery of an A3 publication. The content for the publication was drawn from presentations by design practitioners whose work is situated in either an academic or a professional context. I was required to attend four presentations, organised by the course, to gather the material for the publication; to identify key quotes from the speakers; take photographs of the session and engage in discussion with them to get an in-depth insight into the way they work.
Below a Mock-Up of my publication. Photos&details of the print version soon.
Kate McLean is an artist and designer, creator of smellmaps of cities around the world. She focuses on human perception of the urban smellscape.
While the visual dominates in data representation Kate believes we should tap into alternative sensory modes for individual and shared interpretation of place.
Graphic Design, Art Direction, Education, Curation, Research, Social Media, being an Author, Popular Studio, Self Initiated Projects and Exhibitions is more or less what Peter is concerned with. All of these activities for him are rooted in the same passion.
His main fascination is concrete, industrial landscapes, and what he later came to know as ‘Brutalism’. It’s hardly surprising as Peter grew up in the North East of England in the late 1970s.
David’s design career started as soon as he left school. At the time he was considering college options, his art teacher made him notice his work was “very graphic”, pushing him towards the right direction.
A lucky coincidence allowed him to begin his practice in a design studio in Old Street. Since then David has developed several projects.
The journey as an illustrator started at LCC, in Elephant and Castle with a BA in Typography. The difference between Rebecca and her classmates was mainly the use of computer. This due to the passion for a more crafty, DIY, hand-made kind of aesthetic. She didn’t believe, initially, she could achieve that type of feeling with the use of a computer. Nevertheless she discovered with the time and her work experiences that you cactually can. The computer is just a tool.
